Styrenic Polymers: How The Iron Islands Wolf Became Most Feared Enforcer Of Ramsay Bolton

Known for his brutality even in his homelands, Styr had risen to become the Magnar - or ruler - of the island of Thenn beyond the Wall. As a wildling, he had spent his life raiding and battling for dominance in an unforgiving land. But Styr's ruthless nature would lead him farther south than any of his people had ventured before.

First Contact with Styrenic Polymers

When Mance Rayder began uniting the wildling clans beyond the Wall into a cohesive force, Styr was initially resistant. As Magnar, he answered to no one but valued his independence. However, Mance proved a clever negotiator and war leader. Recognizing Mance's strength could protect his own lands, Styr eventually pledged himself and his warriors to the King-Beyond-the-Wall's cause.

The Great Ranging and Clash with Night's Watch

News of Styr and the willingness of the Thenns to raid south of the Wall soon reached Lord Commander Jeor Mormont during his Great Ranging. When Mormont's forces were attacked by wights and others, Styr led the initial charge against them. Fierce fighting ensued, with both sides taking losses. In the end, Styr withdrew with surviving Thenns but the encounter set the tone for future clashes between wildlings and the black brothers of the Night's Watch.

Meeting Ramsay Bolton and the Second Sons

After Stannis Baratheon's devastating defeat at the Battle of Winterfell, Ramsay Bolton solidified his cruel rule over the Dreadfort and surrounding lands. However, maintaining control required a large and loyal force. Ramsay thus made an alliance with Styr, promising him lands if he bent the knee and served as an enforcer. Styr agreed, recognizing Ramsay as a brutal yet effective leader whose protection could further his own ambitions.

Terrorizing the Smallfolk

With Styrenic Polymers and his well-trained Thenns at his command, Ramsay was able to quell any signs of rebellion through targeted intimidation. Entire villages were put to the sword if their lords even questioned Ramsay's authority. Styr showed no mercy, believing fear and pain the only ways to enforce rule over the wild, superstitious Northerners. Over time, mere rumors of the Magnar approaching were enough to cow most residents into submission.

The Siege of Moat Cailin

When news came that a rebellion was brewing near Moat Cailin, Ramsay sent Styr to crush it. The Thenns surrounded the crumbling fortress, cutting off supplies. After weeks of bombardment, starvation forced the defenders to surrender. But Styr showed no pity, personally beheading every captive man, woman and child with his massive axe. The brutal scene left even hardened soldiers shaken but reinforced Ramsay's control over the North. Only complete fear and devastation, it seemed, could break the spirit of the Northerners.

The Boltons Victorious Over Stannis

Unfortunately for Stannis Baratheon, Ramsay Bolton continued consolidating power in the North. When word came the exiled king was marching a second time on Winterfell, Ramsay gathered his forces - including Styr and the fearsome Thenns - to meet the challenge. In the ensuing Battle of the Bastards, Ramsay used clever tactics mixed with brute force to outwit Stannis. Styr led ferocious charges that broke the enemy lines, sending Stannis fleeing once more from the region. With no rival left to challenge him, Ramsay's rule over the darkest reaches of the North appeared absolute.

The victory over Stannis, unrest continued simmering in the North. When Jon Snow rode south with an army of wildlings and Northmen, Ramsay marshaled his forces - including Styr - for a final showdown. In the second Battle of Winterfell, Ramsey almost broke Jon's lines before the Knights of the Vale arrived as reinforcements. Ramsay ordered a retreat but was ultimately captured, executed and fed to his own hounds. For the Thenns, their alliance with House Bolton had ended in failure. Without Ramsay's protection, Styr gathered his warriors and retreated back beyond the Wall, his brutality and madness no longer useful in the changing political winds of the post-Bolton North.
